Got your character's backstory? Their archetype? Have you polished them to a high sheen? Maybe you've figured out what kind of fighter you want them to be and what style you want them to use, but when it comes to getting the actual move set in place, you're feeling intimidated. Fear not! Your fedhead has you covered with some generic move set arrays!
I highly advise against just straight up copy-pasting these move sets directly into your application. If we get a bunch of folks doing that, we’re going to have a roster full of characters that fight in exactly the same way, and that ain’t no fun. Instead, I recommend using these as starter templates and swapping out a few moves to customize them to your character. If you know what style of fighting you want for your character but don't know which moves to swap out, look at the example videos listed in Character Creation 104 and 105 for possibilities. You can also just mix up some moves from two or more of the different lists below to come up with your own.
In addition to the following arrays, here are links to Wikipedia entries that have comprehensive lists with detailed written descriptions of different types of moves. This one is for strikes, this one is for aerial maneuvers, and this one is for holds.
Speaking of Wikipedia, if you know of a wrestler that has a fighting style you like and want to adopt for your character, try looking them up on the Pro Wrestling Wiki. Many pro-wrestlers and their move sets are listed here.
Consider your base set to be 10 regular moves, 2 special/signature moves, and 1 finisher. You may add more to your set, but keep in mind there’s only so many moves your character can make in any given match, and having a list as long as your arm has the potential to be overwhelming to match writers. Most matches are only three paragraphs long, so it’s better to be succinct. As a general guideline, try to keep it at a max of 15 regular moves, 4 special/signature moves, and 2 finishers.
Your moves are not set in stone. Feel free to change one, some, or all of your moves as you play your character.
Generally speaking, regular moves are your character’s bread and butter in the ring and don’t typically have special names. Special/signature moves are a bit more flashy, complex, or impactful and have special names bestowed upon them by the wrestlers that have them in their move sets. Finishers are meant to be the thing your character does to, as the name would infer, end a match, and also have special names. These moves are a big deal and are rarely used more than once per match, with kick-outs of the pins that follow happening even more rarely.
These are by no means meant to be definitive or what I feel are the most ‘effective’ moves. Rather, these lists are to help newbies get started and serve as a springboard for further research.
A final note about move sets: While they are a part of your character, and important for match writing, they are far from the most vital thing. Which is kind of a bummer because I've found they're the most intimidating aspect of character creation for newcomers. Of all the elements of character creation, the move set should be the least of your worries. Do not overthink it. If this is the one thing that is preventing you from roleplaying and you're still feeling uncertain after reading this, please reach out and I'll be happy to help you and/or just make one for you.
